I like to MOVE IT MOVE IT!!!

It's a catchy song. It grabs the attention of kids of all ages, and sticks in the brains of us parents. With the words smack dab on the front of the poster, you'd think you'd hear that beloved song a little more, but unfortunately, you don't.

That is not to say that this movie disappoints. It isn't as good as the first, but rarely a sequel stands up to the mastery of the original. You do, however, see a little more personality of the monkeys, and more crazy penguin antics, which are always fun.

I love those penguins.

There are several good things about this movie; there are a lot of laughs that can be had, a few lessons to be learned, and even a few touching moments. It's good for all ages; even parents will enjoy it.

You learn the origins of Alex, the lion, and how he came to New York. You meet his parents and a huge hippo named Moto Moto. Melmen becomes a medicine man.

It is very much worth the watch. I give this movie four stars:

A movie where your reflection is evil.

The trailers looked great. I couldn't wait to see this movie. And I wasn't dissappointed.

I am a horror movie junkie. It's not often you get to see a really good horror flick. Sure, slasher films are a dime a dozen, blood and gore are everywhere. But give me a good horror movie with a good storyline and I'm hooked...

Mirrors had a great storyline. And the gore scenes, even though there could have been more for my taste, were great. In my favorite scene, a woman rips her jaw right off of her face.

Kiefer Sutherland plays Ben, a former dective running from his "demons" and trying to piece his life back together. He gets a job as a night watchman and the horror begins.

Tropic Thunder

Hello again, dear readers. I am quite sorry that it has been awhile since my last review, I had the opportunity to take a much needed vacation. I want to make sure you know that this is not a frequently occurring thing; there will be reviews, news, and posts on this blog at least 3 times a week, more if life allows.

So, now that that is out of the way, on to the review!!

As you can tell from my previous blog post, Seems Promising..., I had high hopes for this movie. I am a huge fan of Jack Black and Ben Stiller and pretty much thought that anything these two would star in together would be hilarious. Add Robert Downey Jr. playing a white man who is playing a black man to the picture, and I pretty much thought the laughs would come in spades...

Alas, I was disappointed. Tropic Thunder is a movie filled with testosterone and low brow jokes. It even goes a little too far by making fun of retarded people.. There was an article in the Washington Post asking readers to ban this movie for that reason... There is some comedy to be found in this movie, just not too much. Sure, there are a lot of people who will look at it different than I do. Personally, however, I didn't think this was that good of a comedy...

I give Tropic Thunder 1 star: because honestly, this could have been done so much better. These actors are of more caliber than that...

Taken

Do you want to see a movie that keeps you watching? How about take a look into a father's mind? Check out Taken.

I watched this movie thinking that it wouldn't be all that good. Liam Neeson, in my opinion, is a good actor; but not great. I must say, I was proven wrong.

Mr. Neeson shows his propensity for greatness in this movie. He plays a father willing to go to the ends of the earth to find and rescue his kidnapped daughter. He portrays the emotions of a father on a mission so well it's believable. One tends to think they're looking in on someone else's life...

Not to say the story itself isn't far fetched: the dad just happens to be an ex-CIA agent. But somehow, whether it's the director, the actors, the story, or just the overall tone of the movie itself, it is believable.

I highly recommend you check this out. It is very much worth it.

I give Taken 5 stars: because the ride it took me on was absolutely exhilarating.

RIP Bernie Mac

"I came from a place where there wasn't a lot of joy," ... "I decided to try to make other people laugh when there wasn't a lot of things to laugh about."

The world of comedy mourns it's fallen king. Saturday, August 9, 2008, was a very, very sad day. Bernard Jeffrey McCullough, a.k.a. Bernie Mac, died that day of pneumonia.

Bernie Mac is survived by his wife, Rhonda, and daughter, Je'Niece Childress. Hollywood.com reported that his wife begged him to live, "Don't leave me," she implored as she sat by his bedside...

Mac was born in Chicago, in a pretty rough neighborhood, and lived in a house with his very big family. He became a professional comedian in 1977, at the age of 19. Since Mac refused to change what he stood for, he wasn't very widely accepted and therefore wasn't well known for most of the 80's.

In 1992 he made his silver screen debut in Mo' Money, playing the small part of a club doorman. His next movie was Who's The Man? where he played the character G-George. Since then he has been an icon in comedy films, playing in high grossing films such as The Transformers and Ocean's 11, 12, and 13.

Mr. Mac was also considered one of the Original Kings of Comedy{2000} along with Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer.

At least his spirit still lives on in the movies he played in and the TV shows he starred in. If we ever get a craving for a good Bernie Mac laugh, we can just find a rerun of The Bernie Mac Show or check out one of his many hilarious movies.

Step Brothers

Have you ever sat down to watch a movie totally thinking that this would be a good one? Have you ever read reviews, horrible reviews, and thought, "the critics were probably too hard on it... It's gotta be good, it's Will Ferrell?" I did.

No movie has disappointed me more {well, maybe Kill Switch} and made me feel that not only did I waste my time completely but I felt that I was STUPIDER for seeing it. It was more than a disappointment; it was a slap in the face.

Will Ferrell is usually such a funny guy that one would think everything he does will be filled with laughs. This is not so in Step Brothers. It's not John C. Reilly, he does a good job with his part; it's the movie as a whole. It stinks.

Basically, two 40ish guys still live with their parents. Their parents get married. They move in together. The "men" act like 5 year olds... And the movie goes forward. It makes me wonder if there are really men out there who act like this; totally immature, self centered idiots. I mean, these characters still found it necessary to ask permission from their parents to do things. Amazingly dumb...

I hate to say it, folks, but this movie is Terrible with a capital T. Please don't waste money on it, unless of course you like a movie leaving you feeling dumber than you were before you walked into a theatre. Shoot, don't even waste time. It is REALLY not worth it.

I give Step Brothers one star and one pathetic star: because it's bad. It gets one good star because, well, it's still Will Ferrell...

Get to Know Sour Orange... Why I Love Movies

I love movies. It's a passion of mine. Nothing helps me to escape reality more than a good movie. Sometimes, a good movie can bring me closer to reality. Movies are like that; they touch you if written well enough.

I love movies for so many reasons. There are the memorable moments:

you know, those moments you see in a particularly great movie that just stick with you for hours after the film is over.

Then there are the moments in movies that just make you crack up, laugh, and sometimes squirt Pepsi out of your nose:

you know, those crack me up, make me go nuts, belly hurt from laughter moments...

And let's not forget the moments that bring tears to your eyes:

happy tears or sad tears, those moments seem to be so powerful that they provoke a significant response from your core being...

And then, my favorite movie moment of all, those moments that scare the crap out of you:

moments that make you freak out at the littlest sound outside your window; images that haunt your dreams...

The greatest movies have at least two of these moments, in my humble opinion. Make me laugh and cry in the same film and you have yourself a lifetime fan.

Movies are made up of a series of moments. Just like life. However, in the end, I think that most of us watch movies just to get out of our own life now and then. Take us away from our reality and be whisked away into a land much different than the one we know and love...

So, why do I love movies? I love movies for the moments. I love movies because I like to take a vacation from reality, even if it is only for an hour or two, once in awhile. Movies do that for me. And I hope they do the same for you.

So, why do YOU love movies??

Seems Promising...

With a huge all star cast featuring comedy kings such as Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and , Robert Downey Jr. {who, by the way, is in black makeup for this film} this movie is sure to make you laugh.

Premiering August 13, 2008, Tropic Thunder is about a group of spoiled actors sent to Vietnam to film a movie. This group set out to make the "most expensive war movie," but eventually the producers shut them down.

After that the fun begins when the self absorbed actors are forced to encounter real bad guys and real war situations in Southeast Asia.

Also make sure to look out for some cameos by Nick Nolte and Tom Cruise.

With this cast, and the great makeup job done to Robert Downey Jr, I can't wait to take a peek at this movie.

Lifetime Achievement!!

Guess who is being honored with a very well deserved lifetime achievement award? You got it, Al Pacino!!

The well established actor has played more than a few legendary characters such as Tony Montana in Scarface, and John Milton {the devil himself} in The Devil's Advocate in his lifetime, making him more than well deserving of this award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to him at the Rome Film Festival in October. Pacino was quoted saying, "“Thank you for bestowing your Marcus Aurelius acting award on me; it is a further indication of the homage to the work of the Actor’s Studio and I am very honored to receive it.”

As we well know, most movies with Mr. Pacino in them seem to do fantastically well; personally, I think he is a very good actor and deserves this honor.

Kill Switch

One sees a Segal movie and thinks, "Alright! Action! Cool fight scenes! I'm there!!"

I hate to say it but this movie just does not deliver.

In Kill Switch, Steven Segal uses a double in his fighting scenes, so they lack the usual luster of an awesome Segal movie... But that's not all; Segal is trying way, way too hard to talk with a southern {/ghetto??} accent in this movie. It is almost torture every single time this man opens his mouth in this movie.

The only thing this movie might have going for it is the plot, which isn't altogether horrible. But as well as the script was written, between the crappy accent and the fighting scenes with a double {that doesn't much look like the star} it might be hard to follow, and keep down your lunch.

I give this movie one pathetic star: because it really was that terrible. It's not even worth one cool looking gold star... Don't waste money on this movie, don't even waste time; if you do you will lose respect for Steven... And we sure don't want that, do we...

The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Six years after the series ends, swooping in to get our minds working again, comes X-Files: I want to Believe. With the movie comes a new, fresh, young agent; Dakota Whitney, played by the ravaging Amanda Peet.

Yes, you did see right; Mulder was on the run from the FBI in the series finale. But all is forgiven when Agent Whitney needs his help on a case. Agent Whitney beseeches Dr. Dana Scully {Gillian Anderson} to help her to recruit Fox Mulder {David Duchovny} so he can help the FBI to locate a missing agent and other kidnapped women.

Then we meet the priest, Father Joseph Crissman, a convicted pedophile and also a psychic, who has visions of this kidnapping yet can't give details.

This movie isn't quite what I expected of an X-Files movie. I expected more mystery, more paranormal sequences. I expected to see an alien or two.

The plot wasn't so bad, and at least they didn't start the movie right where the series left off; it's been six years, the actors have aged.

All and all I give X-Files 3 stars: because I didn't see enough "weirdness" for an X-Files movie.

The Dark Knight {Batman}

The American Psycho. As Batman.

For me, it didn't work. Christian Bale, in my humble opinion, didn't step up to the plate like his predecessors who have played the hero. He seemed to be trying way too hard. Conversely, Heath Ledger brought a new brand of insane to the joker. When he was on screen, he made you forget to compare this Batman rendition to the previous films. He made you realize that this is not part of those, but independent.

The story in this movie twists and turns, and Christian Bale really needs to bone up on his Bruce Wayne; this guy played Bruce as cocky and somewhat self absorbed; something the character has never been.

The action scenes are fantastic, and the special effects are fun; I really liked the way they made Harvey Dent {Aaron Eckhart} look after his accident. It's wicked.

All in all I give Dark Knight 3 stars: because I truly had higher expectations for this movie.

Grace is Gone

If ever there were a movie to make a statement about the war; this is it. And it seems to do it in the most passive way.

Grace is gone is a tear jerker. A sad, melancholy movie that keeps you watching. It is endearing as well as it is sad.

It tells the story of a father who lost his wife to the war in Iraq. He finds out, and instead of telling his children right away he takes them on a trip. At first this poor man, it seems, is in denial.

This movie puts a face on so much of what is going on in the world. What it must be like for the families of the soldiers who perish in this war.

This movie tugs on your heart and speaks to your soul. John Cusack does a fantastic job in his role as the grieving father. You almost think you are peeking into the life of that particular family.

I give this movie 4 stars: because it is so well written.

Meet Dave

Meet Dave. Dave Ming Chang. Dave is our size. Dave is a spaceship.

This is one of the most disappointing movies I've seen put out by Eddie Murphy. There are some funny moments, but all and all I expected much more from this movie.

The basic plot of Dave: a bunch of teeny tiny aliens that look exactly like humans are riding around in a spaceship modeled after their captain. These aliens need to find an orb from their home planet, Nil, to save it, as well as bring home the salt from the ocean... Which would honestly kill the whole human race. The aliens fall in love with us huge beings... Who wouldn't? My question is this: where was the table salt when you needed it???

The only humor in the whole movie is really when the aliens think that, "welcome to Old Navy" is a generic greeting, and other things that only aliens would do, like pooping money or trying to fight a stuffed frog.

The shortage of laughs in this film is amazing. Given the power of the acting you expect so much more. This movie has so many bright, funny stars it should have been much more than it was; Eddie Murphy as the captain, Elizabeth Banks as Gina, the woman who met Dave by hitting him with her car, Gabrielle Union as number 3, and a myriad of other familiar faces...

I give Meet Dave 2 stars: because it could've been so much more...

Hancock

Big police chase. Guns going off. Banks getting robbed. Chaos ensuing and all. What is a city to do? Well, here comes Hancock, like it or not, to the rescue!!

His style of hero is much different from the norm, which is what makes this movie fun. He's rough, gruff, and out of control. He drinks, he smells, and he really doesn't seem to care what people think of him. His fashion of heroism involves wreaking more havoc than the criminals; perching a group of robbers on the point of a tall building stuck in their car... It's refreshing to see a brand new take on heroes; that they can be "human" too.

Then one day the gruff Hancock saves the life of Ray {Jason Bateman}, a public relations manager and a very nice man. Hancock is impressed with Ray and seems to really like him. Ray and Hancock become friends, and the story continues from there. Ray helps Hancock with his PR problems...

There is also a clever plot twist you never would have seen coming. This movie has it all. It's funny, packed with action, laughs, and lovable moments.

I give Hancock 5 stars: because yes, I really liked it that much. It was fun to watch, and even the end left you with a smile on your face.

I definitely recommend seeing this movie as soon as you can. As for taking the kids? Depends. There is some strong language used in this movie {"Hancock, you smell like alcohol!" "That's cuz I'm drunk, bitch!} so I'd say keep it for the older set.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

So, have you seen Hellboy? It's actually a fantastical, comic book like movie about a demon baby, who was brought up from hell from Nazis and recruited by the "forces of good" to help fight the "forces of evil." The first movie has a lot of what you're looking for in a good "dark comic" movie; action, romance, and above all, colorful characters. The story was great, and the movie was fun to watch.

I was excited to see a sequel to Hellboy. The villains looked even more intriguing, and the new characters seemed to be interesting. All and all, the movie was good, but it lacked something the first movie had: a good, fulfilling ending.

Hellboy II seemed to end abruptly, making you thirst for more. You know by the ending that there will be another in this series, and I have a feeling it really won't measure up. Just a gut feeling, but I really think that it will pale in comparison to its two predecessor.

Hellboy II was, all in all, a good watch. Like most sequels, it wasn't as good as the first, but it was good. You got to be thrust into that comic book world again, and even got to know Hellboy's friends a little better. Actually, you got to see what it would be like to sit and have a few beers with them.

I give Hellboy II: The Golden Army 4 stars: because when you watch it, you feel like you are in that world.

Wanted

Notice the poster. First person you see is Angelina Jolie. Enticing. Makes you think, "Oooooh, this is gonna be good! Angelina with a gun!" Or at least somewhat good; reminiscent of Mr & Mrs Smith... Turns out, the main character ISN'T Angelina at all...

It's this guy , whose only other noticeable film credit is The Chronicles of Narnia. {Yes, he has done other things... Atonement, The Last King Of Scotland, and Becoming Jane}, but in this movie he is almost unnoticeable, even when he becomes "dangerous". By the way, if you don't know his name by now, it's James McAvoy...

This movie is so far fetched in so many ways. I love a good story, a good make-believe. But not when you are trying to pass it off as present day reality. Do you really think that those of us who suffer from anxiety attacks could shoot the wings off of flies if only we learned how to "control" our attacks? That just seems way too unlikely...

Angelina does play the sexy assassin; she seems to fit that role perfectly. But McAvoy just can't play the part he was cast very well at all. He muddles in it, and when he is supposed to be cocky, he just looks like one of those poor schoolyard nerds who, in a moment of triumph after winning the national chess tournament, gets slapped a high five by the prettiest nerd in the room...

The action is there, the story is there, and even some of the right actors are there. But if they would have just cast a better leading man, the movie would have been a whole lot better. Mr. McAvoy can act, there is no question about that; just not in this kind of film...

So, dear readers, don't waste money on this film. Check it out for free if you can. The action and the story are worth your time. The ending is good; you really don't see the twist that comes.

So, all and all, I give this movie three stars:

The effort was there, and the writing was ok... If you can believe some of the far fetched things the writers want you to, {which anyone with an imagination can, I assume, for the sake of a story} than you will enjoy watching Angelina shoot 'em up and drive some nice, fast cars and kill some bad guys. :)

The Life Before Her Eyes

Wow. What a good keep-you-watching-eyes-glued-to-the-screen-don't-wanna-even-get-up-to-pee movie. The story keeps you watching.

I'm surprised I haven't heard much buzz about this movie and just kind of stumbled upon it. Man is it good. Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood do a FANTASTIC job telling the story of Diana, a woman who is suffering from survivor's guilt from surviving a Columbine like school shooting 15 years in her past.

I cannot accurately describe the twists and turns this movie takes, but I can tell you that this movie keeps you watching. The story is intoxicating.

This is not a movie I personally would usually go for; this was one I picked purely for the sake of this blog and ended up falling head over heals for.

I read the synopsis of this movie and was skeptical at best. I checked out the trailer and saw potential... So I've embedded it here for your viewing pleasure:

The Life Before Her Eyes was a great story. I would, however, recommend seeing it at a point in time where you can give it 100% of your attention, because if you missed a minute of it you'd probably be confused.

I give this movie 5 stars: my highest rating, because the story was phenomenal, and the ending was, well, surprising. I gotta say, I'm a total sucker for a really good ending...

The Happening

A movie by M. Night Shyamalan. I'm not sure why I keep thinking he'll put out another good one. So far his only good movie was The Sixth Sense. This movie wasn't so bad; at least it wasn't as much torture as say, Unbreakable.

The beginning of this movie makes you think it will be a goodie; you see two women on a park bench going about their business, all of a sudden one gets somewhat confused. Next thing you know she's pulling a pin out of her hair and stabbing herself in the neck. Interesting.

Cut to a construction scene where guys are falling out of the sky. Interesting again....

Yet as interesting as the opening scenes were, unfortunately the movie never really delivers. The characters are so generic they are boring, even though the celebrity cast did as well as they could with the parts they were given.

This story could've been so much more, if given the right.... I don't know... Direction. Sorry, M. Night, but you really need to stick to writing and let someone else direct your stories. Maybe then the picture would've had more, ummmm, UMPH to it.... It definitely would've made for better viewing...

Reign Over Me

Ok, here is a tear jerker. It's a heartfelt movie that tells the story of two old friends who connect again. Both have things to learn from each other.

Adam Sandler mystifies in his awesome portrayal of Charlie, a widower who lost his whole family in the events of 9/11. Those events rocketed him into a downward spiral where his friend, former college roommate Alan Johnson, finds him.

Johnson {played by Don Cheadle} is at a turning point in his own life. He sees a shadow of his former friend and is determined to help him regain himself; while on this quest he finds a little of himself in the process.

This movie is an awesome portrayal of friendship, grief, growing, and coping. While it lacks in action it overflows with great acting, good storyline, and even a realistic ending.

I'd say rent it; or better yet, buy it for those times when you need to be reminded what true friendship and heartache look like.

Untraceable, starring Diane Lane, is a crime thriller that sticks with the times. It centers around FBI agent Jennifer Marsh, who is good at her job and even seems to find a little humor in it.

It starts out with a cat stuck in a rat trap. It spirals into so much more.

I don't want to ruin the movie for you, but I must tell you, it is a great story. The plot is great, and the movie even has a message entwined in the storyline.

If you are looking for a typical FBI movie with lots of car chases, gun fights, fist fights, and brawls, this movie is not for you. This movie delivers the chills and goosebumps in a more subtle way...

Would you log onto a web site to watch someone die? Would you be an anonymous accomplice to murder?

It's Not Rocket Science...

Welcome.

I bet by now you're wondering just exactly what isn't rocket science... Well, if you like movies, then you've come to the right place and are reading the right blog.

To me, making a good movie shouldn't be anything close to rocket science. It should be as easy as knowing what you want to say, what your fans like, and knowing your target audience. Surprisingly, however, there are so many movies out there that, well, really suck. What I don't understand is how some of those movies can be considered worth the money of the movie ticket...

So this is where I come in. I'm here to save you both time and money. Whether it be saving you a rental fee, a movie ticket, or just some precious time I'm here to tell you just what movies are worth the trouble.

Hopefully this will help you in your quest for great entertainment. To me, there is nothing worse than hearing awesome things about and having great expectations for a movie and then, throughout the whole movie, wondering when the "good" part starts.
